An Unremarkable Life poster

I’ll give it three stars for the three stars: Patricia Neal, Shelley Winters, and Mako. It’s great to see classic actors with classic faces, even with a script by Marcia Dinneen that borders on sappy. Patricia Neal and Shelley Winters are elderly sisters living together, with Neal predictably playing the sweet-natured one and Winters, typecast as usual, as bitter and domineering. How much more interesting the performances would have been if the casting had been reversed, and the veteran actresses Read the rest of this entry »

frighteners

It’s a very bad sign when the dvd opens – not as a special feature – with Peter Jackson explaining how exciting it was to work with all the new special effects. Tellingly, he has nothing to say Read the rest of this entry »

The male cast of Dark Shadows has already proven itself to me as the gayest in television history, with actors running the gamut of onscreen persona from snobbish queen and fussy dandy (Louis Edmonds as Roger) to dreamboat hunk (Joel Crothers as Joe/Lt. Forbes) to rugged suit man (Anthony George as Burke #2/Jeremiah) to outlandishly queer outcast (Jonathan Frid as Barnabas), but lo and behold, in March of 1968, they’ve outdone themselves with the brief addition of Craig Slocum, playing ne’er-do-well sailor Read the rest of this entry »

Endless Love posterMy prime motivation for a return to Franco Zeffirelli’s Endless Love was to examine my past-life failure to sit through the film in my dark basement during the early eighties when it ran late at night on HBO. I watched so much fantastic film and so, so much dreadful dreck during these semi-lost years, seldom without even a casual thought of turning the set off, that it seems unthinkable that I would have have foundered with Endless Love, a movie advertised principally with the promise of scandalous sex and teens on the road to ruin. How could the ninth-grade me have failed Read the rest of this entry »

Sophia Loren plays dual roles, but she's really fit for the queen.

Sophia Loren plays dual roles, but she’s really fit for the queen. Her disdainful bosom-gaze here is prophetic of the famous shot of her staring down Jayne Mansfield’s breasts.

Watchable ONLY for a very young Sophia Loren in the title role, this film is otherwise an excruciatingly unfunny attempt at farcical comedy. Loren makes a fantastic, haughty, stunning, and cunning Cleopatra. We get to watch Loren as queen-goddess cement herself as a movie-goddess by the film’s end! (She also plays a look-alike slave-ingenue to a far diminished effect.) Alberto Sordi tries to get laughs with his buffoonish character, but it’s sub-par Three Stooges material t Read the rest of this entry »

Mitsuko madness in Manji.

Mitsuko madness in Manji.

Oh that Mitsuko! If you like your lovers constantly conniving and horrifyingly manipulative, you’ll love Mitsuko. I won’t spoil any of her surprises, but she doesn’t disappoint! The storyline is sort of like a Japanese Peyton Place gone berserk, centered Read the rest of this entry »

Barnabas may have terrorized me as a child, but Jonathan Frid’s stumbling through dialogue with his desperate paraphrasing and faulty improvisation brings me no end of delight as an adult. This snippet from March of ’68 (in the 1795 storyline) contains back-to-back treasures related to Angelique and the curse she set upon Barnabas, as explained to Joshua Collins, played by Read the rest of this entry »

Season Two down before the arrival of spring!

It’s a step up from s1, just as I’d remembered, though I didn’t recall the descent into darkness and intensity being so sharp. Angelus may be my favorite villain from the entire series, and it’s not lost on me that my three most-loved episodes from this Read the rest of this entry »
