50 – The Sweet Smell of Success – cynicism’s always relevant
51 – Bowfinger – Murphy’s gentler side
52 – Definitely, Maybe – surprisingly bittersweet, cute
53 – The Perks of Being a Wallflower – lovely little movie
54 – Melancholia – a lovely metaphor
55 – Much Ado About Nothing – deft directing delivers
56 – John Dies at the End – better with drugs?
I also liked Definitely, Maybe. Ryan Reynolds needs to go back to whatever agent was sending him those scripts.
I want to see Perks of a Wallflower!
Melancholia: The director is problematic for me. If I watch it, how many minutes should I give it before throwing in the towel? I need to know because lately I haven’t been passing the ten-minute mark and I know that’s unfair – most of the time.
John Dies at the End: I think I went 15 minutes before getting the tone of the film. It made me feel like I was in high school being forced to watch a movie with all my straight male friends after smoking a load of weed. I desperately wanted to change the channel then, so my grown-up, unstoned self took charge now and shut it off. No appeal.
Much Ado About Nothing: I wonder if this is the summer film to beat for me. I found it to be a breezy treasure that I know I’ll want to see again. I might even feel inspired to do some light Shakespeare research beforehand. See, Joss Whedon, you can do so much better than Avengers. Note: LA Lady thinks that he purposefully squeezed this into his schedule to make up for the Marvel blockbuster, which I saw with her at the drive-in. I’m not convinced that he felt compelled to “make up for” Avengers, but I imagine that he wanted some breathing room after the restrictions of the giant-budget action movie. I hope the payday will free him up to do (or to green light) some more side projects or pet TV shows.
See Perks and Mud if I forgot to say that before.
Melancholia. I had sworn off Von Tiers but Doris W convinced me to give this a shot. I can honestly say the woman-hating was not present and some genuinely nice film moments were. I liked the second half much more than the first.
John Dies at the End – I totally understand
MAAN – I know you guys aren’t fans but I really liked it. And I don’t think Whedon has to make up for any movie that grosses 1.5 billion. If anything you should both be glad that it did that well so he can have more freedom the next time. My understanding was that it was more of a palate cleanser. Like you, after directing such a big budget film where I imagine he had notes and interference and questions from all fronts in addition to what must have been some big egos on set, I think he must have welcomed making a movie completely on his own terms and literally not having to leave home to do it.
The real questions is – are going to watch the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the fall?
I’ve had your Mud rec on the books for a while. I’m hoping it hits second run before long. They run kids’ shit and Iron Man forever and it squeezes out the other shows that I want to see.
As long as Joss Whedon gets some freedom after the blockbusters I’ll be happy. And yes, I will, without question, be tuning in when Agents of SHIELD begins. Remind me to be patient if I get frustrated. Sometimes Joss Whedon shows need time to play out. For me, that’s Dollhouse.
And did we manage to convince Doris W to watch Firefly. Seriously, it can be done in a day. Shit, with us there, she could do that whole series plus Serenity. I’d rather schedule that for a winter activity, however.
I find I do most of my binge watching when I’m in hibernation mode. Also, during the summer I have all the tennis happening which dominates a good three weeks of watching time.
Mud is not for McConaughey but for the two boys. I thought they did a great job of capturing boys of that age.
I don’t know if DW watched Firefly or not. I offered my DVDs but she said she her sister’s which means she really has no excuse for not giving it a shot.
Many thanks yet another excellent submit. The location otherwise might just any one get that type of data such the perfect ways of creating? I’ve a business presentation up coming weeks time, using this program . on the find these kinds of information.
